Bæjarins er fyrst getið í Landnámu, kenndur þar við Geira þann er fyrst bjó á Geirastöðum við Mývatn en hraktist þaðan vegna vígaferla. Sat hann hér um vetur en settist að lokum að í Geiradal í Króksfirði í Varðastrandarsýslu og gaf öllum aðsetursstöðunum nafn sitt.
