Síðast bús. í Reykjavík. Elín Kjartansson, widow of Hannes Kjartansson who was for many years Iceland's Consul General and U.N. representative in New York, was buried at Bronxville, just north of New York City, on Saturday, August 21, 1982.
She died on Thursday, August 19, at the home of her daughter, Margaret, in Burlington, Vermont, after prolonged ill health, just four days after her 68th birthday. M. Hannes Kjartansson, ræðismaður Íslands í New York 1948. Reverend Jónas A. Sigurðsson, pastor of the Icelandic Lutheran church at Selkirk, Manitoba, who died May 10, 1933, was Elín's father. Her mother was Stefanía Ólafsdóttir, who died September 19, 1959, passing away at the home of son-in-law and daughter, Hannes and Elín Kjartansson, in Bronxville,
where she spend the final years of her life.
Elín, born August 15, 1914, attended a commercial college and also graduated in teacher training in Winnipeg, teaching for a time at Lundar. She worked at the Icelandic exhibit at the World's Fair in New York in 1939 and 1940, marrying Hannes Kjartansson, head of a wholesale import and export firm in New York, on March 31, 1941. The
couple had three children. Jón, born June 11, 1942, died in 1979, and it is beside that son's remains that Elín was laid to rest at Bronxville; Hannes was buried in Reykjavík
following his sudden death of a heart attack in New York in 1972. A daughter, Stefanía Margaret, was born November 18, 1944; she married Farrow Allen; their home has been at Burlington, Vermont, and it was with Margaret that Elín spent her final years, having suffered a crippling stroke several years ago that left her very much incapacitated, leading finally to her death. Anna Elín is the youngest child, born January 16, 1948, married to John Macko and living at Rochester, New York, with a young son, Jón. Some women are described as having regal beauty; that was true of Elín Kjartansson. She and her husband were a strikingly impressive couple as they received countless guests from Iceland and elsewhere during long residence in Bronxville. Commercial ties and diplomatic duties kept Hannes an inordinately busy man,
