History
Askja er megineldstöð norðan Vatnajökuls, í Ódáðahrauni á hálendi Íslands. Umhverfis Öskju eru Dyngjufjöll, en skarð er í gegnum fjöllin til austurs, sem kallast Öskjuop.
Gífurlegt eldgos hófst þar 29. mars 1875. Gos þetta nefnist Öskjugosið 1875, eða Dyngjufjallagos. Öskufall frá gosinu hafði mikil áhrif á Austurlandi og átti sinn þátt í því að stór hópur fólks flutti þaðan til Vesturheims.
Eftir að gosinu lauk varð mikið landsig í Öskju, og myndaðist þá Öskjuvatn. Á austurbakka Öskjuvatns er gígurinn Víti, og er talið að askan í gosinu 1875 hafi komið þar upp.
Í tengslum við Öskjugosið 1875 varð einnig hraungos í Sveinagjá á Mývatnsöræfum, og rann þá Nýjahraun. Askja gaus síðast árið 1961.
