History
Öskjuvatn er næstdýpsta stöðuvatn Íslands. Það varð til við Öskjugos árið 1875 þegar landið seig og myndaði mikla gosöskju sem fylltist af vatni á fyrstu árunum eftir gosið. Vatnið, sem er í Dyngjufjöllum í Ódáðahrauni, var dýpsta stöðuvatn Íslands á árunum frá 1875-2009, 11 km² að stærð og 220 m á dýpt, en nýlegar mælingar hafa sýnt að Jökulsárlón er nú dýpsta vatn Íslands, um 280 m á dýpt.
