Hann var skírður Öskurhóll vegna þess að hann gaf frá sér drunur og blísturhljóð og var sagt að það heyrðist í mílufjórðungs fjarlægð en hann er þó hættur að blístra núna. Hverinn er hóll eins sjá má á myndunum hér að neðan. Mikið og stöðugt gufuuppstreymi er úr Öskurhól.
