History
Svartifoss er foss í Skaftafelli í Vatnajökulsþjóðgarði. Svartifoss er einn af frægustu fossum landsins, sökum fagurrar umgerðar úr óvenju reglulegum, gildum basaltstuðlum. Stuðlarnir mynduðust fyrir um 300.000 árum, þegar hraun rann niður Skaftafellsheiði og fyllti gamlan árfarveg. Við hæga kólnun dróst bergið saman og klofnaði þá í stuðla sem standa lóðréttir á kólnunarflötinn.
Stuðlabergsmyndunin umhverfis fossinn var Guðjóni Samúelssyni innblástur við hönnun á mörgum byggingum m.a. loftsins í sal Þjóðleikhússins, ytri ásýnd Hallgrímskirkju og Akureyrarkirkju.
