Skógafoss (60m) er talinn meðal fegurstu fossa landsins. Í Skógaá, ofan Skógafoss, eru a.m.k. 20 aðrir fossar, margir fallegir, og það er auðgengt meðfram ánni og gljúfrum hennar. Þrasi Þórólfsson var landnámsmaður að Skógum. Hann nam land milli Jökulsár og Kaldaklofsár og var sagður fróður og forn í lund.

Sagt er, að Þrasi hafi fólgið gullkistu í helli bak við Skógafoss og að það glitri í gull hans gegnum vatnsúðann, þegar sólin skín á fossinn. Margir hafa reynt að finna kistuna og einu sinni tókst að koma bandi á hring hennar, en aðeins hringurinn kom, þegar togað var í.
Þessi hringur var notaður á kirkjuhurðina í Skógum og er nú meðal dýrgripa Skógasafns
