Húnavatnshreppur varð til 1. janúar 2006 við sameiningu Bólstaðahlíðar-, Sveinsstaða-, Svínavatns- og Torfalækjarhrepps sem samþykkt var í sameiningarkosningum sveitarfélaga 20. nóvember 2004. 11. mars 2006 var svo samþykkt í kosningum í Húnavatnshreppi og Áshreppi að sameina þá undir nafni Húnavatnshrepps og gekk sú sameining í gildi 10. júní það ár að afloknum sveitarstjórnakosningum.
