Grímur Eiríksson fæddist 23. apríl 1916 í Ljótshólum í Svínadal, Austur-Húnavatnssýslu.
Við andlát Eiríks bónda í Ljótshólum 1932 tóku bræðurnir Grímur og Jónmundur við búskapnum 16 og 18 ára gamlir ásamt Ingiríði móður sinni. Geta má nærri að þrautseigja, nægjusemi og dugnaður hefur í ríkum mæli einkennt þeirra fyrstu búskaparár svo að takast mætti að halda fjölskyldunni saman í miðri kreppunni. Grímur kvæntist 15. júní 1947 Ástríði Sigurjónsdóttur frá Rútsstöðum í Svínadal og stunduðu þau búskap í Ljótshólum.

Foreldrar Gríms voru hjónin Eiríkur Grímsson, f. 12. júlí 1873, d. 7. september 1932, frá Syðri-Reykjum í Biskupstungum og Ingiríður Jónsdóttir, f. 15. júní 1888, d. 23. júní 1976, frá Ljótshólum. Eiríkur og Ingiríður eignuðust þrjá syni og voru þeir auk Gríms: Jónmundur, f. 12. mars 1909, d. 25. september 1912, og Jónmundur, f. 9. janúar 1914, fyrrverandi bóndi Auðkúlu, nú búsettur í Asparfelli 12, Rvík. Grímur átti einnig fóstursystur, Guðrúnu Jakobsdóttur, f. 2. október 1921, húsfreyju að Grund í Svínadal.
