Fossinn sprettur fram úr sprungnu bergi Vatnsdalsfjalls.
Áin fellur úr djúpu og fögru kleyfagili rétt sunnan bæjar og til Vatnsdalsár vestan Gilárskróks, en þar hefur hún kastað sér þvert yfir dalinn og fellur síðan með hlíðarrótum út að Kötlustaðamel.

Giljá tekur á móti öllu vatni af Sauðadal, en málvenjur um það, hversu langt fram á dalinn Giljárnafnið nær eru á reiki. Efsti hluti árinnar kemur úr Gaflstjörn syðst á Svínadalsfjalli og heitir þar Fremstilækur. Miðlækur og Ystilækur falla niður austurhlíð dalsins nokkru norðar og er þetta svæði nefnt Lækir.
Enginn talar um Giljá svo langt fram á Sauðadal. Brunnárdalur skerst úr Svínadalsfjalli sunnan Reykjanibbu og eftir honum rennur Brunná í Giljá.
