Saga

A proud Icelander, Hannes and Carol celebrated his heritage with a trip to Iceland to learn more about the Hallgrimson family. Their Icelandic memorabilia is an integral part of the family home. Hannes' first language was Icelandic and he never tired of trying to teach his grandchildren the words he could still recall.

Starfssvið

Agriculture played a large part in Hannes' life. In 1951, he moved to Center, N.D., to teach agriculture methods to returning WWII vets. It was in this job that he met Carol. In 1955, Hannes and family moved to Culbertson, where he served as associate agricultural county agent to Roosevelt County.
In the late '50s, Hannes was instrumental in bringing in PVO, the first safflower plant, to Culbertson. He was a founder of CB&F Feed Plant and was proud of his contributions as a managing staff member, as well. Both plants, now under new ownership and management, continue to employ Culbertson townspeople today.
Corral Motors, a Chevrolet dealership and garage, was started by Hannes and his brother Joe Hallgrimson in the 1960s. In the 1970s, Hannes purchased the Standard gas station from brother Joe. In the 1980s, Hannes and Carol purchased the old International Harvester shop, where they ran an automotive repair shop, laundromat and later, a secondhand clothing store under the Hannes' Car Care, Etc. name. In Hannes' later years, he kept busy with rental properties and business dealings. He was a true entrepreneur.
Hannes' list of spare-time activities, many and varied, nearly always included Carol. He was a member of Lion's Club for many years. Frontier Days and the Trail Ride were favorites, and Hannes' participation usually included a parade entry, wagon, horse riders and music from his beloved concertina. A talented bass, Hannes could be counted on to provide the lower harmony of any hymn. Hannes was delighted to win an award for the "Most Romantic Beard" in Culbertson's Diamond Jubilee. He and Carol dressed the part and looked like they walked out of an old tintype picture.
Sapphire hunting was an interest for quite some time, with Carol and Hannes showing the grade school kids how to "pick" sapphires out of concentrate. Hannes also became quite proficient at faceting sapphires and other stones. Antique hunting was also an interest. He and Carol were always happy to guide tours around their historic home. The antique-filled interior and flower-filled gardens were enjoyed by everyone who viewed them.
